The eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane, enables a person to hear by vibrating in reaction to sound. A small hole may not affect hearing much, but a larger one or one in a particular area of the eardrum may cause hearing problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27765\" src=\"https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty1-300x174.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty1-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty1.png 404w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Who might need tympanoplasty surgery<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A tympanoplasty may be needed to repair a perforated eardrum that does not heal on its own. Signs that the eardrum is not healing include persistent hearing loss and drainage from the ear (otorrhea).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Adults or children can get a hole in the eardrum from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Head trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Repeated or severe ear infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Surgery, such as placement of ear tubes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Cholesteatoma (skin cyst in the ear)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Inserting something into the ear canal, such as a cotton swab<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A sudden change in pressure, such as from a wave slapping the eardrum or a blast injury<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Because children are more likely than adults to develop ear infections, to receive ear tubes or to insert things in their ears, they are more likely to have eardrum perforation that needs tympanoplasty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The physician may perform the following to determine if tympanoplasty will help address symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Medical history and physical examination<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Examination of the ear using an otoscope and a microscope to visualize the eardrum<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Comprehensive audiometry with age-appropriate hearing tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Tympanometry, which is a test to measure the eardrum\u2019s movement when pressured air is directed into the ear canal<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A CT (computerized tomography) scan, especially if a cholesteatoma is suspected<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A questionnaire that helps the doctor understand the impact of the symptoms on the patient\u2019s quality of life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>What Happens Before a Tympanoplasty?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A child\/adult \u00a0will have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/hear.html\">hearing test<\/a>\u00a0before the surgery. This lets doctors compare the results with hearing tests done after the surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>What Happens During Tympanoplasty?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A very simple eardrum repair may be conducted in a doctor\u2019s office with local anesthesia. But for most patients, especially children, tympanoplasty is performed in an operating room with general anesthesia. Patients can usually go home the same day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Once the patient is asleep under anesthesia:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The surgeon enters the ear through the ear canal or an incision behind or in front of the ear. The approach depends on the size and location of the hole in the eardrum and if the ossicles are displaced or damaged.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">After locating the hole in the eardrum with a microscope or endoscope, the surgeon removes the edges of the hole and then closes it with a graft, which is a patch of tissue from the patient or a manufactured material. The graft supports growth of new cells and over time closes the hole in the eardrum. The graft may cover just the hole or the entire eardrum.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The graft is secured to the ear canal (and to other structures, depending on the type of tympanoplasty) with a spongy packing that dissolves over time as the eardrum tissue grows back together and heals. The healing process takes weeks or months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The duration of the surgery depends on the extent of repairs. Repair of a small eardrum perforation may take only a few minutes, while more complex surgeries that require reconstruction of the ossicles or removal of the mastoid bone may last several hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27766\" src=\"https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty2-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty2-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bazargananhospital.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Tympanoplasty2.jpg 399w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>How Long Does a Tympanoplasty Take?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The operation usually takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>What Happens After Tympanoplasty?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The surgery team will give you care instructions. For example, you might need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">avoid nose-blowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">sneeze with the mouth open<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">avoid getting water in the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">use ear drops, if prescribed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">For about a week after surgery, you may have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">mild ear pain that gets better with pain medicine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">a small amount of blood or fluid draining from the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">a feeling of fullness in the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Usually, any packing placed in the ear will dissolve over time. At the first post-operative visit 2\u20133 weeks after surgery, the surgeon may try to remove any that is left. You can expect your hearing to improve over 2 or 3 months after the surgery. The surgery team will schedule a repeat hearing test 8\u201312 weeks after surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Are There Any Risks From Tympanoplasty?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">There&#8217;s a very small risk of bleeding or infection from a tympanoplasty. Other risks include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">graft failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">hearing that doesn&#8217;t improve or that gets worse<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">ringing in the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">funny taste in the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>When Should I Call the Doctor?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Call your doctor if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">You see fresh (bright red) blood on the bandage or packing, or oozing from the ear or incision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The ear or incision is more tender, red, or swollen than it was when you left the hospital.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">You have a\u00a0feverover 100.4\u00b0F (38\u00b0C).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Your pain gets worse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Is a Tympanoplasty?
